Curious as to where knee length socks came from? The first socks were invented by the Greeks and the Romans. They wore animal skin around their feet and ankles, this was very crude and at the time they were not known as socks. By the 6th century, Europeans had begun wearing socks which were called “puttees”. After that, right around the 11th century, socks became a bit more popular but were mostly worn by the rich. In 1589 knitting machines were invented. This made the mass production of socks faster, easier and cheaper but it wasn’t until the 1800s that socks had become popular enough that most of the civilized world was wearing them.
